Activist claims meat substitute is unsafe

Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, says the fungus-based meat substitute Quorn makes people ill, but Marlow Foods, makers of the product, and some leading allergy experts dispute Jacobson's claims. Quorn products are made from mycoprotein, starting out as fungal paste before being flavored and shaped into a variety of products. Quorn is the best-selling poultry substitute in American health food stores, analysts say.
