Officials, union agree to mediator in Rhode Island teacher firings

A mediator will preside over negotiations between the superintendent and the teachers union in Central Falls, R.I., the district's superintendent announced Thursday. Schools chief Frances Gallo said she hoped the mediator could help the district work out an alternative reform plan to avoid firing all the teachers at the district's sole high school, which is one of the lowest-performing schools in the state.
