Oilfield services companies increase shale R&D spending

Baker Hughes, Halliburton and other oilfield services companies are increasing their spending on research and development, observers say. "One new technique involves changing the order in which segments of each well are fracked, with an eye toward impacting the surrounding rock in a way that improves yields," Russell Gold writes. "Another is changing chemical mixtures to better suit the shale being drilled."
