Alternatives to LEED help promote construction of green buildings

The need to lower the costs associated with the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards has led to the creation of alternatives such as Green Globes or the Living Building Challenge, according to this article. For some, such as the city of Santa Monica, Calif., LEED remains the cost-effective option as the city has personnel trained for it, but Green Globes may address that through self-certification. "We're just happy to see people participating, so if having more options allows that, we're all for it," said Dominique Smith, executive director of the U.S. Green Building Council chapter in Los Angeles.
