Educator explains the importance of teaching argument writing

Argument writing provides students in grades six to 12 with the skills to weigh and use evidence to support their claims, former English teacher Ryan McCarty writes in this blog post. He notes that argumentative writing skills will be required on Common Core State Standards assessments and in college classes. "Argument is important in all disciplines, which can make it a common thread throughout the school day," writes McCarty, who now works for the Academy for Urban School Leadership, a Chicago nonprofit.
