House panel to consider bill on U.S. research policies

A House panel is expected to debate a bill today that would alter the National Science Foundation's peer-review process and reduce funding for research in social sciences. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, introduced the bill Tuesday. Several research organizations have released statements opposing the bill.
