Mixed-use development will give retail real estate a boost, according to participants at the San Diego/Tijuana Urban Land Institute. With a range of assets, including hotels, offices and apartments, more people will gravitate to the retail component and stay longer, they said. "It's a challenging environment, from a standpoint of trying to balance all these components," said Alex Liftis, vice president of development for Terramar Retail Centers. The ultimate goal, panelists said, is creating an experience.
