Ohio Lawmakers Remain Neutral On Intelligent Design Debate

Fearing a political backlash, Gov. Bob Taft and many legislators say they plan to leave the adoption of science standards to the state Board of Education. Proponents of intelligent design, a theory that says a higher being is responsible for life, had hoped the state Legislature would debate the teaching of the theory. Separately, the presidents of Ohio's 13 public universities this week are expected to ask the board not to include intelligent design in the curriculum.
