NBCT focuses on preventing dropouts in California

A National Board Certified Teacher in California has been named her school's Certificated Employee of the Year. Cathy Hertel, who teaches independent studies at a Yucaipa alternative school, says it's important to help students before they drop out of school. "I try to instill in them responsibility and how important education is. California has about a 45% dropout rate in high school. That's because they don't have critical-thinking skills and problem-solving skills," Hertel said.
