PCI opposes four state legislatures' measures that would increase policyholders' ability to sue insurers over claim practices deemed to be in "bad faith." PCI says these measures would raise costs for everyone by increasing the amount of litigation insurers would have to fight. "These laws add cost to the court system and greatly expand the type of damages that can be awarded," PCI Vice President Rey Becker says. "You want to go after the few bad actors in the industry who are engaging in a pattern of these practices. If you go beyond the general business practice requirement, you penalize companies that are just making honest clerical mistakes."
