Experts ID mechanism behind beta cell demise in type 1 diabetes

Researchers in Belgium found that genes associated with type 1 diabetes and present in human islet cells triggered the onset of the disease when the cells were exposed to cytokines. The findings suggest that beta cells play a role in the recruitment of immune cells, triggering type 1 diabetes, the researchers reported in PLoS Genetics.
