High-tech care, long stays drive large hospital bills

State data show more California patients are racking up hospital bills that exceed $1 million, due to long stays and the use of expensive technologies to keep them alive following a critical illness or trauma. Big medical debts are a strain on families, but hospital officials say little can be done to reverse the trend because the cost of a saved life is very high.
