Snacks account for one-third of calories consumed daily

Solid fats and sugars from snacks contribute about 32% of daily calorie intake in women and about 31% in men, according to the USDA's Agricultural Research Service Food Surveys Research Group analysis. Researchers also found that women's average intake of empty calories is 624 calories per day, which is about two to four times their daily limit, while men's average empty calorie intake is 923 calories per day, or about two to three times their recommended daily limit.
