Va. city council unanimously bans living in hotels

The Newport News, Va., City Council has agreed to ban living in a hotel or motel. The law, which councilors say will not increase homelessness, will take effect next year and will prohibit the renting of a room for more than 30 days over a 60-day period. Extended-stay hotels and business travelers will be exempt, and the Department of Human Services/Social Services can grant a 90-day waiver for people who prove they need time to find housing.
