Bill calls for HHS to revise hospital readmission penalty

A bipartisan House bill would require HHS to change the formula used to penalize hospitals for high readmission rates to reflect care based on the number of low-income patients eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. Co-sponsor Rep. Jim Renacci, R-Ohio, said hospitals that treat the most vulnerable patients are unfairly penalized because poorer patients have fewer resources that help prevent readmissions.
