FTC: State NP practice restrictions don't benefit patients

The Federal Trade Commission released a policy paper urging state lawmakers be reconsider measures that restrict the scope of practice for advanced practice registered nurses to avoid reducing competition that benefits health care consumers. AANP said the paper could help lawmakers weigh the effects of state licensure laws on patients. "Like the FTC, we believe that competition among health care providers results in greater access, lower costs and quality improvement. Full patient access to high-quality nurse practitioner services is essential for making such competition a reality," AANP co-president Kenneth Miller said.
