Legal experts: White-collar criminals aren't scared by stiff sentences

Would-be white-collar criminals often conclude that the potential rewards of committing fraud outweigh the possible punishments if they get caught, according to a panel of legal experts at a forum in South Carolina. Although some such as Bernard Madoff have received huge sentences, that may not deter others from repeating their crimes. "Most financial criminals don't think about it, and they don't think they'll get caught," said Daniel Dooley, a CPA and a former senior partner with PricewaterhouseCoopers.
