Estimates of damage in Japan rise to $180 billion

The extensive damage in Japan cannot be immediately evaluated, but analysts from Credit Suisse and Barclays foresee the cost rising to as much as $180 billion. More than 76,000 buildings sustained damage. Insured property losses in Japan could run as high as $34 billion, based on an assessment from Air Worldwide, a U.S.-based risk analysis company.
