Expert: Transition from grass lawns to xeriscaping is easy

A grassy lawn can easily be converted into a drought-tolerant landscape by killing the grass with herbicide and replacing it with chopped brush mulch, eventually adding shrubs and perennials, horticulturist Calvin Finch writes. Irrigation systems should be maintained, and sprinkler heads should be replaced with drip irrigation to save water, Finch advises.
