U.S. broadband goals are stymied by lack of spectrum, analysts say

Federal plans to open up more bandwidth to satisfy demand for broadband wireless services are doomed to fall short, despite legislation that paves the way for spectrum auctions, Reinhardt Krause writes. The Obama administration set a goal of having 300 MHz of new spectrum available by 2015 -- with unused broadcast spectrum expected to account for nearly half of the bandwidth -- but analysts say the government will have to make do with much less broadcast spectrum than it anticipated.
