Syrian refugee count rises sharply as fighting intensifies

The number of Syrian refugees rose 10% in a week amid the use of deadlier weapons such as cluster bombs by government troops against residential areas. Refugees total 1.12 million, the United Nations says. France has been lobbying for an end to the EU's ban on providing weapons to Syrian rebels but says it might supply them regardless.
