May is the best time for mulching

Bert Vonderahe, who teaches landscaping at Columbus State Community College in Ohio, says the time to mulch is in early May after planting. It is best to lay 1 to 3 inches of mulch but more in areas that draw heavy sun or less in cooler, shaded areas, according to experts. Mulch should also be kept a few inches away from the crown of the plant to prevent bugs from nesting against the plant, they note.
