CMS timeline shows need to address readmissions now

Hospitals should begin addressing three main causes of readmission -- congestive heart failure, pneumonia and acute myocardial infarction -- that CMS will begin evaluating in October to assess penalties against Medicare payments that begin in fiscal year 2013. Hospitals should take steps to review discharge and origin of readmission data, calculate readmission rates based on varied factors, and share data with providers and other stakeholders.
