Environmentalists criticize McDonald's for promoting intensive farming practices, but the quickservice giant's announcement that it would switch to using sustainable palm oil has met with grudging praise from critic Phil Covington. The company needs to do more, he says, but the policy is an important first step. "Once that process begins, it's hard to go back, and since companies like McDonald's can change whole food-production ecosystems single-handed[ly], incremental steps can nonetheless have a huge impact," he writes.
