Call for UN action as Syria crisis reaches year

As the popular uprising in Syria passed the one-year mark a coalition of 200 NGOs from 27 countries urged Russia and China to stop blocking efforts at the United Nations to end the violence that has killed more than 8,000 people, mostly unarmed civilians. United Nations-Arab League envoy to Syria, Kofi Annan, was scheduled on Friday to brief the Security Council on efforts to broker a diplomatic solution to the crisis.
