Farm bill supports food, not commodities

The 2007 farm bill, unlike previous bills which focused on cash crops such as corn, wheat, soybeans, rice and cotton, emphasizes specialty crops including fruits, vegetables and nuts. The bill also will provide $5 billion in spending on food assistance programs for schools, crop research and expanding export markets, among other efforts, the USDA says.
