Jack Elliott Shapiro was honored by his hometown of Warren Township, N.J., for four decades of aviation writing. Readers of the Newark Star-Ledger, where his column ran for nearly forty years, knew him by the byline Jack Elliott. "I like to emphasize the spirit of people who want to go further, faster, higher and seek new horizons," said Elliott, a pilot with instrument, glider and single-engine seaplane ratings. For 38 years, Elliott told his stories in a weekly newspaper column, "Wings Over Jersey," and in 2007 he republished the best of his columns in a book entitled "Adventures in Flying."
