Professor: Fixing the dropout problem begins in preschool

Schools aren't responsible for the achievement gap, nor can they fix it on their own, said Vanderbilt University professor Joseph Murphy in an ASCD conference session this weekend. But schools can prevent it from growing by tackling it when students are in preschool rather than waiting until ninth grade to introduce programs meant to keep at-risk students from dropping out.
