Sand filter system offers fast, inexpensive water filtering

A rapid sand filter system in development at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte could offer a simple, cheap method for filtering drinking water. Its creator said the system requires only PVC pipe, sand and inexpensive chemicals and cleans water more effectively -- and 30 to 50 times faster -- than slow sand filters.
