Top 9 TARP banks originated $36 billion in loans in January

The top nine banks that received money through the government's Troubled Asset Relief Program made $35.9 billion in new loans in January, according to federal data. The total was the smallest since October when those banks' loan originations hit $41.6 billion. The Treasury Department said significant increases in loan originations in November and December of last year may partially explain the decline.
