Gorilla checkups require precision and teamwork

Every two to three years, a team of veterinarians moves fast to sedate and perform thorough physical exams of the seven gorillas in Illinois' Brookfield Zoo. Last week, team members sedated Binti Jua and her son, Bakari, in their cages, then quickly transported them to the zoo's medical center for blood tests, X-rays, teeth cleaning, tuberculosis testing and cardiac ultrasounds. Test results are entered into an international database that helps animal caretakers around the globe monitor the health of the gorillas in their care.
