Club grooms Colo. 5th-graders to become young orators

Fifth-graders in the Lafayette Elementary School Oratory Club in Colorado have been meeting after school since November to improve their public speaking skills. The students, who have recited the Gettysburg Address and Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, receive critiques via Skype by Ford Theatre's teaching artist Stephen Schmidt, who helps them improve their podium presence, body positioning and delivery, among other things. "When these kids realize what they can do, it's magic in this room. I think people unfairly underestimate what fifth-graders can do," said teacher Angela Hambleton, who formed the club.
