U.S. government, ICANN to yield domain name oversight in 2015

The U.S. Department of Commerce and its Internet Assigned Numbers Authority contractor, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, will give up control of the Internet's domain name system in September 2015, when ICANN's current contract expires. "The timing is right to start the transition process," said Lawrence Strickling of the Commerce Department.
