Marriage debate under way in Vermont

Vermont lawmakers on Monday launched a week of hearings to discuss a measure that would bestow equal marriage rights in the state, which in 2000 became the first in the nation to create a separate system of civil unions for same-sex couples. About 200 anti-marriage activists picketed Monday outside the statehouse in Montpelier, and were met by about 50 marriage advocates, according to this article.
