Railroad deals give West Coast ports competitive edge

With an expansion of the Panama Canal slated for completion in 2014, U.S. ports are scrambling to make upgrades that will help them capture the expected growth in shipping traffic. A coalition of West Coast ports says its partnership agreements with Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Union Pacific will give it a competitive advantage. Meanwhile, the ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles reported double-digit gains in February imports and exports.
