N.C.'s Research Triangle a major center for smart-grid innovation

Roughly 3,000 employees at more than 100 facilities across a 13-county region of North Carolina are involved in developing next-generation energy solutions, according to a report from Duke University that found the state's Research Triangle now rivals Silicon Valley as the nation's smart-grid hub. The report highlights a handful of cutting-edge projects under way in the Triangle -- which plays host to at least five smart-energy firms -- including ABB's $10 million Smart Grid Center of Excellence and North Carolina State University's $18.5 million Future Renewable Electric Energy Delivery and Management project.
