Cutting food waste starts with sustainable packaging

Recycling is a key component in sustainable packaging, but manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond end-of-product-life issues to address sustainability throughout the supply chain, according to Ronald Cotterman of the American Institute for Packaging and the Environment. Packaging improvements that reduce food waste are expected to be hot areas of innovation, he says, especially when it comes to labeling, portion control and improvements that extend shelf life.
