Food, beverage and CPG companies will eliminate about 4 billion pounds of waste from packaging, according to a 2011 study from the Grocery Manufacturers Association. To help reduce waste, companies will focus on clarifying "sell by," "use by" and "best by" dates to avoid consumers throwing away safe food. Packaging that offers portioning or resealing capabilities will help eliminate repackaging once consumers take the food home. Manufacturers also will work on packaging alternatives that help improve the shelf life of food.
