Lunar base may set stage for Mars mission

Manned missions to the moon could act as a staging ground for later missions to Mars, according to NASA's Wendell Mendell, who is in charge of the Human Exploration Sciences office. Mendell said that while NASA needed to think in terms of conserving resources for the ultimate flight to Mars, a lunar base could still be maintained, possibly with private sector assistance.
