Russia signals interest in Iran deal with U.S., signs missile deal with Iran

Russia has signaled an interest in a deal with the U.S. regarding Iran, returning an overture explicitly set forth by U.S. President Barack Obama in a secret letter to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Russia might be open to imposing new sanctions against Iran in exchange for a U.S. agreement to drop its Eastern European missile defense installations. The U.S. claims the system would be built to protect it and its interests from the threat of a nuclear Iran. Russia nevertheless has signed a deal with Iran to provide it with powerful air-defense missiles, according to reports.
