Whoopie pies hit the mainstream

Whoopie pies, those cream-filled chocolate cakes once seen mostly in Amish country and Maine, are suddenly everywhere from restaurants to retailers. The classic version uses round pieces of chocolate cake to sandwich French vanilla cream filling. The desserts are sold at Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, Manhattan's Magnolia Bakery and other venues.
