API expects hydraulic-fracturing study to prove process is safe

The Environmental Protection Agency said it has allocated $1.9 million to study whether hydraulic fracturing poses hazards to surface and groundwater. The American Petroleum Institute expects the agency's study to confirm that the drilling process "is a safe and well-understood technology for producing oil and natural gas."
