France's Lagarde scrutinizes Basel proposals on capital, liquidity

Christine Lagarde, finance minister for France, said regulations proposed by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision to require banks to increase their capital reserves and liquidity could hinder economic growth. "I understand the regulators of the Basel Committee, who want to prevent such a crisis from recurring," Lagarde told French newspaper Les Echos. "But their recommendations on liquidity and capital are severe and, taken together, risk seriously threatening the financing of the economy."
