Obama orders a safety review of U.S. nuclear plants

President Barack Obama asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to determine whether nuclear reactors in the country could withstand rare but catastrophic natural events, such as those that brought about Japan's crisis. The Union of Concerned Scientists, a public-interest watchdog, accused the commission of ignoring equipment malfunctions and unsafe conditions at power plants that could trigger serious nuclear incidents.
