Shar-Pei gene may provide insight into human fever syndromes

U.S. and Swedish researchers have discovered that the variation in the gene hyaluronan that causes the wrinkled skin in Shar-Pei dogs also is responsible for the periodic fever disorder in the dogs that can be likened to inherited autoinflammatory periodic fever syndromes in humans. The discovery "opens a new research field in canine and human inflammatory disease," the lead researcher said.
