NREL adds facility for integrating smart grid technology

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory has just opened the Energy Systems Integration Facility in Golden, Colo., providing opportunity for research into smart grid technology and other fields. The $135 million facility has 15 labs and its own supercomputer. "The question is how to connect all the different kinds of work -- generation, storage, distribution, appliances -- and understand how they interact on the grid," NREL Senior Researcher James Cale said.
