FDA: Curb use of souvenir ultrasound videos and OTC heartbeat monitors

Health professionals should not order ultrasound videos solely to provide souvenirs to expectant mothers, and over-the-counter Doppler ultrasound heartbeat monitors should be used only under medical supervision, according to the FDA. Although no health risks from either device have been identified, their long-term effect is unknown, said Robert Phillips of the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health.
