Group releases guidelines for treating sickle cell patients with pulmonary hypertension

The American Thoracic Society issued new guidelines on how to identify, manage and treat sickle cell disease patients at higher risk of death from pulmonary hypertension. The group recommends hydroxyurea treatment, but chronic transfusion therapy should be considered if patients don't respond or can't take hydroxyurea. The guidelines were published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
