Study looks at physician practice ACO participation

A study in Health Services Research showed 25% of responding physician practices have joined an accountable care organization, while 15% said they plan to be in an ACO soon. However, the majority of responding practices have not done so and have no immediate plans for joining an ACO, researchers said. The study found practices that do not have plans to join an ACO tended to score lowest on care measurement, patient engagement and quality metrics, something researchers suggest makes sense. "It would have been surprising and extremely disappointing if those already in ACOs had the least capabilities," said health policy expert Stephen Shortell.
