Japanese partnership hopes to develop "quake-proof" buildings

The Japanese government is collaborating with private companies to develop innovative structures capable of withstanding severe earthquakes. So far, the partnership has developed a three-story building shaped like a birdcage that is made of high-strength steel. The prototype's inner structure is separated from the outer steel section by an oil-filled buffer, allowing it to swing if it is jolted by an earthquake.
